Small facilities big people’s livelihood: outdoor trash can build a firm urban environmental defence

Recently, with the creation of the national civilized city to promote in-depth, outdoor garbage can from the street to the park, from the community to the business district, seemingly inconspicuous bins, is a multi-functional guardian of the city’s tidiness and health.

The renewal of outdoor garbage bin has become the focus of residents’ attention. In the past, due to the insufficient number of outdoor recycle bins and the lack of classification signs, this year, the community introduced 20 groups of classified outdoor recycle bins, which not only come with anti-odour sealing design, but also encourage residents to classify the garbage through the points reward mechanism. ‘Now it’s much more convenient to go downstairs and throw rubbish away, and the environment of the neighbourhood has changed for the better, and everyone is in a good mood.’ Resident Ms Wang lamented. Data show that after the transformation of the community rubbish landing rate decreased by 70%, rubbish classification accuracy rate increased to 85%.

Environmental health experts pointed out that outdoor recycle bin is an important line of defence to block the spread of germs. According to the monitoring of the disease control department, exposed rubbish can breed harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus within 24 hours, while standardised rubbish collection can reduce the density of germs in the surrounding area by more than 60%. In [a transport hub], the municipal government disinfects bins three times a day and equips them with foot-operated opening lids, effectively reducing the risk of cross-infection and safeguarding the health and safety of travellers.

Outdoor recycle bins also play a key role in promoting resource recycling. In [an eco-park], the intelligent sorting bin automatically distinguishes recyclables from other rubbish through AI image recognition technology and synchronises the data to the sanitation management platform

‘The layout and management of outdoor trash cans is an important yardstick for measuring the level of refinement in urban governance.’ Currently, many places are exploring the ‘one square kilometre, one plan’ standard for setting up outdoor trash cans, combining the scientific layout of points with heat maps of human flow, while promoting innovative equipment such as solar-powered compressed bins and overflow early warning systems, to further enhance management effectiveness.

From curbing environmental pollution to guarding public health, from practising green development to enhancing the city’s image, outdoor trash cans are carrying ‘big livelihoods’ with ‘small facilities’. As the construction of smart cities accelerates, these ‘invisible guardians’ of the urban environment will continue to be upgraded in the future, creating a cleaner and more livable living environment for citizens.
